HMICFRS was first invited by the Gibraltar Police Authority to inspect the Royal Gibraltar Police in 2016. There is no statutory requirement for the RGP to be inspected but both the GPA and the RGP agreed that it was good practice to undergo these inspections. Their terms of reference for this inspection were to conduct:
In 2020 HMICFRS returned to Gibraltar at the invitation of the Gibraltar Police Authority. The carried out a new inspection and reviewed what work had been completed since their previous visit.
In 2022 HMICFRS once again visited Gibraltar. On this occassion they were aiming to evaluate the progress the RGP had made in addressing the recommendations and areas for improvement from their 2016 and 2020 Inspection Reports.
With the majority of those tasks now complete, the RGP continue to work towards improving efficiency and effectiveness.
