On the afternoon of Wednesday 5th September 2018, officers of the RGP Economic Crime Unit arrested Romanian national, George Christian SLAVE, 27 years old, for fraud, money laundering and drug related offences.
During the course of the 5th September, together with others, SLAVE had conspired to pass counterfeit banknotes off as genuine to local businesses. In total five local businesses located in Main Street had been targeted, during which low value items had been purchased using counterfeit €100 banknotes. The returned change had then been retained, and represented the proceeds of crime.
SLAVE was arrested for passing a counterfeit note as genuine and when searched was found to be in possession of counterfeit banknotes valued at €2,100. He was also found to be in possession of a preparation containing cocaine weighing approximately 2.6 grams.
SLAVE was later charged with the following offences and was denied bail by the police:
1. One count of possession of a controlled class A drug;
2. One count of conspiracy to pass counterfeit notes as genuine; and
3. One count of possession of criminal property.
On the 7th September 2018, SLAVE appeared before the Magistrates Court. The case was adjourned until 1000 hours on Wednesday 12th September with the defendant being remanded in custody.
