During the early hours of this morning, Response Team officers were patrolling Varyl Begg Estate when they spotted a Gibraltar-plated car with tinted windows. On pulling up next to the vehicle to have a word with the driver, he drove off – heading south on Europort Road on the wrong side of the road and into oncoming traffic.
Officers drove after the vehicle with their blue lights on but the vehicle continued heading south at speeds exceeding 100km/h. The pursuit continued to the Trafalgar Roundabout and onto Main Street, where officers called off the pursuit due to the risk. The suspect car was then seen hitting a speed bump, causing sparks and damage to the vehicle. Following extensive patrols, the car was later spotted on Neil Pinero Road with the suspect in the driver’s seat.
At around 4am, Response Team officers arrested the Spanish man, 32, on suspicion of Dangerous Driving, Failing to Stop, Knowingly Concerned in the Exportation [or attempted exportation] of a Commercial Quantity of Cigarettes and No MVT.
An investigation is ongoing.
